Leasehold Reform
If your lease has less than 80 years to run, your service charges are too high, or you simply want to have control over your property - help is at hand. Owning a lease can now be much more like owning a freehold.
Background
Leasehold 'problems' in Portsmouth have been around for years. Some landlords have exploited unwary individuals both during their period of occupation and at the time they decide to sell, through excessive service charges, professional fees and not least lease amendments and lease extensions. The Government has created a fair balance between the parties. Many leaseholders can now take advantage of the opportunities that exist. The rules allow most leaseholders to:
- Extend their leases by a further 90 years, or
- (With others) acquire the freehold, or
- (With others) take over the 'management' of their flats
