An option for abuse victims is to sue their abusers for compensation. Sometimes it is inpracticable because the abuser is simply not worth a dime or to put it another way is the proverbial “man of straw”. Sometimes, however, they are worth suing, but it is essential to watch out that they do not dissipate assets, or to put it simply off load assets, for example, by transfering their property in to the name of someone else.
The mistake is to sue and successfully obtain judgment and then find that the money has gone. If the abuser has assets, and there is a risk that they may dissipate assts, or to put simply off-load them, then action needs to be taken.
That action is to obtain a freezing order from the court.
The effect of the freezing order is to prohibit the abuser from disipating assets until after the conclusion of the case. That way you know that if you obtain judgment you stand a chance of turning it in to money.
